Transportation

France possesses one of the densest and most efficient transportation networks in the world. The crown jewel is the TGV (*Train à Grande Vitesse*), a state-owned high-speed rail network connecting major cities at speeds up to 320 km/h (200 mph), drastically reducing domestic travel time. The national railway company, SNCF, also operates extensive regional and commuter trains.

The country has a vast and well-maintained highway system (*autoroutes*), mostly operating as toll roads. Public transit within cities is robust; Paris boasts the comprehensive Métro, RER commuter trains, and extensive bus networks, while cities like Lyon, Marseille, and Bordeaux feature modern tramways and subways. Major international gateways include Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Paris-Orly airports. France is also rapidly expanding bicycle infrastructure, with major cities heavily pedestrianizing and adding hundreds of kilometers of protected bike lanes.
