The French housing market is characterized by a stark contrast between highly dense, expensive urban centers and more affordable rural provinces. In Paris, property prices and rental costs are among the highest in Europe, leading many middle-class families to live in the surrounding suburban *banlieues*. Traditional Parisian apartments often feature iconic Haussmannian architecture.
Outside the capital, major cities like Lyon, Bordeaux, and Marseille also have competitive markets, but generally offer larger spaces for lower costs. In rural areas, single-family homes and historic stone houses are prevalent and much more affordable. The French government intervenes significantly in housing, maintaining rent control measures in tight markets and providing extensive social housing known as HLM (*Habitation à Loyer Modéré*), which houses roughly 16% of the population.
