Weather & climate

Because of its immense size, China encompasses a highly diverse range of climates. According to the Köppen climate classification, the country spans subarctic climates in the far north to tropical monsoon climates in the far south.

* **North and Northeast:** Winters are fiercely cold and dry, while summers are warm and humid. Harbin, famous for its ice festival, experiences long, freezing winters. * **Central and East:** Characterized by a temperate, continental monsoon climate. Cities like Beijing have hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters, while Shanghai and the Yangtze delta experience milder winters and heavy summer rains (the "plum rains"). * **South:** Coastal and southern regions (like Guangdong and Hainan) enjoy subtropical to tropical climates with hot, humid conditions year-round and frequent typhoons during late summer and autumn. * **West:** The Tibetan Plateau has an alpine climate with severely cold winters and cool summers, while the northwest (Xinjiang) features harsh, arid desert climates with extreme temperature fluctuations between day and night.

**Best Time to Visit:** Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are generally the most comfortable seasons for travel across the majority of the country.
