China's cultural and spiritual landscape has been historically shaped by the 'Three Teachings': Confucianism (often viewed as a philosophy rather than a religion), Taoism, and Buddhism. Today, the Chinese constitution guarantees freedom of religious belief, and the state officially recognizes five religions: Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Catholicism, and Protestantism. Folk religion and ancestor veneration also continue to play a subtle but profound role in daily life and traditional festivals.
