History

China's history is traditionally understood through its succession of dynasties, beginning with the semi-mythical Xia and the historical Shang and Zhou dynasties. In 221 BCE, the Qin dynasty unified the fractured states, establishing the first imperial dynasty and standardizing writing, weights, and measures. Subsequent golden ages occurred under the Han, Tang, and Song dynasties, characterized by flourishing arts, expansive trade routes (the Silk Road), and profound philosophical developments like Confucianism and Daoism.

In the 13th century, the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty took control, followed by the Ming dynasty, known for building the modern Great Wall and the Forbidden City. The final imperial dynasty, the Qing, ruled from 1644 until the early 20th century. The 19th and early 20th centuries brought what is known as the "Century of Humiliation," marked by the Opium Wars, foreign imperialism, and internal rebellions like the Taiping Uprising.

In 1912, the Republic of China was established, ending over two millennia of imperial rule. Decades of instability followed, including the warlord era, the Japanese invasion during World War II, and a fierce civil war between the Nationalist Party (Kuomintang) and the Communist Party of China (CPC). On October 1, 1949, Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China. The subsequent decades saw tumultuous campaigns like the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution.

Following Mao's death in 1976, Deng Xiaoping introduced sweeping economic reforms in 1978. This marked the beginning of China's "opening up," transitioning the nation from a command economy to a "socialist market economy." Over the last four decades, China has undergone one of the fastest and most expansive industrial and economic transformations in human history.
