Hong Kong has a population of approximately 7.5 million people, making it one of the most densely populated places in the world. The ethnic composition is predominantly Han Chinese, specifically of Cantonese descent, who make up over 90% of the population. The city also hosts a substantial expatriate and non-Chinese community, including large populations of Filipino and Indonesian domestic workers, as well as South Asians, Western expats, and mainland Chinese professionals.
Hong Kong residents boast one of the highest life expectancies globally, contributing to an increasingly aging population. While the primary spoken language is Cantonese, English is widely understood and used in government, business, and higher education. Mandarin is also increasingly prevalent. The society is characterized by a blend of Eastern and Western religious traditions, with large numbers of residents practicing Buddhism, Taoism, and local folk religions, alongside significant Christian and Muslim minority communities.
