Because of its dramatic changes in elevation, Bhutan features three distinct climate zones: subtropical in the south, temperate in the central valleys, and alpine in the north.
The southern plains experience hot, humid summers and heavy rainfall during the monsoon season (June to September), with temperatures often reaching 30°C (86°F) or higher. The central valleys (such as Thimphu and Paro) enjoy a temperate climate with warm days and cool nights in the summer, and cold, dry winters with occasional snowfall. The northern regions are permanently covered in snow and ice, experiencing freezing temperatures year-round.
**Best Time to Visit:** Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) offer the most pleasant weather, clear mountain views, and the opportunity to witness vibrant local festivals. Natural disasters can include landslides during the heavy summer monsoons and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in the north.
