Bhutan is a unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy. The King of Bhutan, known as the *Druk Gyalpo* (Dragon King), is the head of state. The current monarch is His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, who is deeply revered by the populace.
The government operates under a democratic framework established by the 2008 Constitution. The executive branch is led by a Prime Minister, who is the head of government, and a cabinet of ministers. The legislative branch consists of a bicameral parliament: the National Council (upper house) and the National Assembly (lower house).
Administratively, Bhutan is divided into 20 *dzongkhags* (districts), which are further subdivided into *gewogs* (blocks) for local administration. This decentralized system helps ensure that the principles of Gross National Happiness are implemented at the grassroots level.
