Thimphu operates under a dual system of local governance. The urban city area is governed by the Thimphu Thromde (City Corporation), headed by an elected Thrompon (Mayor) who manages municipal services, urban planning, and local infrastructure. The broader district is administered by the Dzongkhag Administration, headed by a Dzongdag (District Governor), appointed by the King via the civil service.
Nationally, Thimphu is the seat of the Royal Government of Bhutan. The Tashichho Dzong serves as the central administrative hub, housing the throne room of the Druk Gyalpo (Dragon King) and the ministries of home affairs and finance. The Parliament of Bhutan, comprising the National Assembly and the National Council, is also located in Thimphu, just across the river from the Dzong.
