Bangladesh has historically relied heavily on its intricate network of inland waterways, with traditional wooden boats, ferries, and motorized launches navigating the rivers. While waterways remain vital, especially in the south, the country has invested massively in land transportation infrastructure over the last decade.
The road network is extensive, connecting all major cities. A monumental recent achievement is the Padma Multipurpose Bridge, which for the first time connects the southwestern region to Dhaka and the rest of the country by road and rail without ferry crossings.
Public transit is evolving. Dhaka, notorious for severe traffic congestion, recently inaugurated its first elevated Metro Rail line (MRT Line-6) and is constructing several more. Bangladesh Railway operates a network of meter-gauge and broad-gauge lines nationwide. Internationally, Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka is the primary gateway, supplemented by airports in Chattogram and Sylhet, alongside deep-sea ports like the one under construction at Matarbari.
