The history of Bangladesh is deeply intertwined with the broader history of the Bengal region. Ancient Bengal was home to several powerful kingdoms and empires, including the Gangaridai, Mauryan, Gupta, and Pala empires. The region was long renowned as an agrarian powerhouse and a center of trade. During the medieval period, the Bengal Sultanate and subsequently the Mughal Empire brought Islam to the region, establishing it as a massively wealthy province known for its muslin and silk trade.
In the 18th century, the British East India Company gained control of Bengal, integrating it into the British Indian Empire. During British rule, the region saw significant shifts in land ownership and economy, often to the detriment of local farmers. Following the end of British rule in 1947, the Indian subcontinent was partitioned. The Muslim-majority eastern region of Bengal became East Pakistan, a province of the newly formed nation of Pakistan, separated from West Pakistan by over a thousand miles of Indian territory.
The relationship between East and West Pakistan was fraught with political and economic disparities. The pivotal 1952 Bengali Language Movement, which demanded the recognition of Bengali as an official language, sowed the early seeds of nationalism. Tensions culminated in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War after a brutal military crackdown by West Pakistani forces. Under the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh declared independence. The ensuing nine-month war, aided by India, resulted in the birth of the sovereign nation of Bangladesh on December 16, 1971.
Post-independence, the country faced severe challenges, including famine and political instability, experiencing several military coups in the late 1970s and 1980s. Democracy was restored in 1990. In the 21st century, Bangladesh has experienced a period of relative political stability accompanied by massive economic growth, significant improvements in public health and education, and a transition from low-income to lower-middle-income status.
