Australia’s infrastructure is highly developed, though maintaining networks across such a massive and sparsely populated landmass requires significant investment. Electricity is largely managed through the National Electricity Market (NEM) in the eastern and southern states. While historically reliant on coal, the grid is undergoing a massive, rapid transition toward renewable energy, particularly rooftop solar, large-scale wind, and battery storage.
Telecommunications rely heavily on the National Broadband Network (NBN), a government-owned corporation that provides wholesale internet access via a mix of fibre, node, fixed wireless, and satellite technologies to cover remote areas. Mobile network coverage is excellent in urban and regional centres but can drop off entirely in the deep Outback.
Water infrastructure is critical due to Australia's arid climate. Extensive systems of dams, reservoirs, and pipelines exist, particularly governing the crucial Murray-Darling Basin, which spans four states and supports much of the country's agriculture. In response to recurring droughts, major coastal cities have also heavily invested in large-scale seawater desalination plants.
