Transportation

New South Wales features an extensive, albeit sometimes stretched, transportation network.

**Roads:** Major arterial routes include the Hume Highway (connecting Sydney to Melbourne), the Pacific Highway (heading north to Brisbane), and the Great Western Highway (crossing the Blue Mountains).

**Public Transit:** Transport for NSW operates a massive network. Sydney is serviced by a large suburban train network (Sydney Trains), an expanding driverless metro system (Sydney Metro), light rail, extensive bus routes, and the iconic Sydney Ferries.

**Rail:** Regional connectivity is managed by NSW TrainLink, which operates XPT and Xplorer passenger trains connecting Sydney to regional cities, as well as interstate to Melbourne and Brisbane. A massive freight rail network serves the mining and agriculture sectors.

**Airports:** Sydney (Kingsford Smith) Airport (SYD) is Australia's busiest international and domestic gateway. A massive new 24-hour facility, Western Sydney International Airport, is currently under construction and slated to open in 2026. Regional airports like Newcastle and Ballina-Byron also handle heavy domestic traffic.

**Ports:** Port Botany in Sydney is one of Australia's premier container ports, while the Port of Newcastle is the largest coal export port in the world.
