Population

New South Wales is home to approximately 8.3 million people, making it the most populous state in Australia. The population is highly urbanized, with over 65% of residents living in the Greater Sydney metropolitan area. Other major population centers include Newcastle, Wollongong, and the Central Coast.

The state boasts a highly multicultural population. While the majority of residents are of European descent (principally British and Irish), there are massive, established communities with Chinese, Indian, Lebanese, Vietnamese, and Italian heritage. Roughly 30% of the state's population was born overseas, and more than 25% speak a language other than English at home, including Mandarin, Arabic, and Cantonese.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make up approximately 3.4% of the NSW population, representing the largest absolute number of Indigenous Australians in any state or territory.

The population is highly educated, with strong tertiary attainment rates, and the workforce is heavily skewed toward services, finance, technology, and healthcare.
