Weather & climate

Sydney experiences a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification: *Cfa*), characterized by warm, sometimes hot summers and mild, cool winters.

* **Temperatures:** Summer (December–February) average maximums range from 26°C to 30°C (79°F to 86°F), though Western Sydney frequently sees days above 35°C (95°F). Winter (June–August) average maximums sit around 17°C (63°F), with nighttime minimums rarely dropping below 8°C (46°F) near the coast. * **Precipitation:** Sydney receives an average annual rainfall of approximately 1,200 mm (47 inches). Rainfall is spread relatively evenly throughout the year, though the first half of the year tends to be slightly wetter. * **Snowfall:** Snow is extremely rare in the Sydney metropolitan area; the last recorded significant snowfall in the CBD was in 1836. * **Natural Disasters:** The region is highly susceptible to bushfires, particularly during hot, dry summers, with the forested fringes facing the greatest risk. Extreme rainfall events caused by "East Coast Lows" can also lead to flash flooding. * **Best Time to Visit:** Spring (September to November) and Autumn (March to May) offer highly pleasant temperatures and lower humidity, making them ideal times to visit.
