Safety

Sydney is widely considered one of the safest major cities in the world, though standard precautions typical of a large metropolis still apply.

* **Emergency Numbers:** Dial **000 (Triple Zero)** for Police, Fire, or Ambulance. * **Crime Overview:** Violent crime rates are very low. The most common issues for visitors are petty theft, such as pickpocketing or bag snatching in crowded tourist areas or on public transport. * **Nightlife:** Sydney's nightlife districts (like the CBD, Surry Hills, and Newtown) are heavily policed and generally safe, though it is always wise to stay in populated areas and travel with friends late at night. * **Beach Safety:** One of the most significant hazards in Sydney is the ocean. Visitors are strongly advised to only swim between the **red and yellow flags** patrolled by surf lifesavers, as rip currents are common and can be deadly. * **Sun Safety:** The Australian sun is notoriously harsh. Visitors should adhere to the "Slip, Slop, Slap" rule: slip on a shirt, slop on SPF50+ sunscreen, and slap on a hat.
