What was the best aspect of being a child? More Game Currencies Was it the lack of responsibility or expectation? The college days spent with friends? We have all got our own reasons to return and be nostalgic, but many of us share a common one: RuneScape.
If you are in your twenties - or perhaps slightly younger - you'll probably have spent a obscene quantity of time on the classic MMORPG. It had been the after-school action of choice for so many people when bad weather forced us indoors (though that was never the only reason to perform ). However, why was it so popular in the moment? How did this absolutely free online RPG, developed in Cambridge, capture the attention and the hearts of so many? And where is it now?
I'll be up-front with you: it is hard for me to write about RuneScape without some level of bias - admittedly based largely upon my own rosy-tinted nostalgia for the game. If it isn't perfectly clear by now: I love it. I loved it and I love the memories I have of it today but I will do my very best to look back at it today in the most objective way I could - for a while, at least.
'RuneScape 2' (because it wasn't officially branded but became widely called ) was released in March 2004 after a rewriting of the first version's then-outdated engine. RuneScape's engine could have had several fresh coats of paint, but compared to WoW's was like a Spitfire into an F-18. The running joke surrounding RuneScape was seeing just how awful it looked - even for its time - and many of the in-game versions were laughable compared to World of Warcraft's full-3D graphics. The point-and-click control system appeared slow and unresponsive compared to WoW's keyboard-controlled movement, and the combat was, to put it bluntly, often boiled down to little more than simply clicking on an enemy - as opposed to the smorgasbord of battle abilities and special moves which WoW's system employed.
RuneScape programmer Jagex has this week announced the launching of this game's first Elite Dungeon that will supply the ultimate challenge for veteran (and brand new ) players.
